Red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) could infest 70% of layers farms worldwide. This nocturnal blood sucking ectoparasite decreases egg production and increases downgraded eggs rate,
thus reducing the annual profitability of egg producers.
Its control becomes more and more difficult, due to an increasing resistance to pesticides, and more severe animal welfare regulations.
External solutions based on the application of pesticides in the houses, even if efficient, are time consuming, require special equipment and their efficiency is worker-dependent. Thus in-feed additives are definitly more convenient solutions to control red mites.
